Feinster kanadischer Hardrock - dafur standen KICK AXE Mitte der Achtziger. Fur den Zweitling "Welcome to the Club" konnte man im "Land des unbegrentzten Wahnsinns" immerhin eine goldene Schalplatte fur mehr als 500.000 verkaufte Einheiten "einheimsen". Warum man aber siebzehn Jahre bis zur Veroffentlichung von "IV" hat verstreichen lassen (mussen), verrat uns Gitarrist Larry Gillstrom im Laufe eines netten Gesprachs.
Q: Larry, viele unserer jungeren Leser durfte der Name KICK AXE rein gar nichts sagen. Kannst du deshalb zu Beginn erst einmal einen kurzen Abriss der Bandhistorie geben?
A: Alles begann in den Siebzigern als Power Trio, welches die Bruder Vic (Bass) und Gary Langen (Drums, Gesang) und meine Wenigkeit gegrundet hatten. Der Platz der vierten Mitglieds wechselte spater standig, bis sich uns schliesslich Raymond Harvey als zweiter Gitarrist anschloss. Dieses Line-Up hatte lange bestand, aber irgendwann verliess Gary die Band aus personlichen Grunden. Ersatz fanden wir in meiner eigenen Familie, denn mein Bruder Brian besetzte den Posten des Schlagzeugers und George Criston stieg als Lead Sanger ein. Wahrend der achtziger Jahre verkauften wir annahrend eine Million Scheiben und konnten einige unserer Songs auf Soundtracks platzieren. KICK AXE standen wahrend dieser Zeit auf der gleichen Buhne mit JUDAS PRIEST, WHITESNAKE, RUSH, METALLICA, TRIUMPH und QUIET RIOT. Rechtliche Probleme mit unserem damaligen Management fuhrten Ende der achtziger Jahre zu unserer Auflosung. Aber wir hatten immer die Absicht einer Reunion zu einem passenden Zeitpunkt. Und der ist jetzt gekommen!
Q: Mehr als siebzehn Jahre sind seit "Rock the World" vergangen. Hast du wahrend dieser Zeit weiter Musik gemacht und warum hat es so lange bis zur Wiedervereinigung gedauert?
A: Nein, aber ich bin der Szene treu geblieben als Manager und Produzent diverser kanadischer Gruppen wie PARADISE und FURY. Die rechtlichen und finanziellen Probleme der Verganngenheit erwiesen sich als schwere Burde und ich erschuf mir ein zweites Standbein mit der Grundung einer eigenen Softwarefirma. George spielte mit Doug Johnson von LOVERBOY bei den bereits erwahnten PARADISE, wahrend Ray mit Bob Rock in Rock & HYDE zockte und ganz nebenbei zum viel gefragten Studio Engineer und Produzenten wurde. Brian und Vic gehorten LIONS GATE an und haben einen Limousinenverleih aufgemacht, der gut lauft. Es halt ungeheuer lange gedauert, bis gerichte alle Entschedungen bezuglich der Namesrechte und anhnlichem getroffen hatten.
Q: Als "Rock the World" 1986 veroffentlicht wurde, steckte das Geschaft mit der CD noch in den Kinderschuhen, weshalb davon nur wenige Einheiten gepresst wurden. Wahrend man das Vinyl nach kurzer Zeit quasi fur ein "Butterbrot" erhalten konnte, erzielt die CD bei Ebay nicht selten Erlose um die 150 Dollar. Wie ware es denn endlich mal mit einer Wiederveroffentlichung?
A: Die steht tatsachtlich fur 2005 an, digital remastert und mit neuen Artwork.
Q: Du hast schon die diversen Soundtracks erwahnt, auf denen Songs von euch sind. "30 Days in a Hole" habt ihr fur meine Lieblings Filmmusik "Up the Creek" aufgenommen, der in Deutschland unter dem selten damlichen titel "Das turbogeile Gummiboot" lief. Uber den Inhalt decken wir mal den Mantel des Schweigens, aber die Songs von CHEAP TRICK, HEART und SHOOTING STAR sind Klasse. Wie sind KICK AXE auf die Liste gekommen?
A: Das hing mit unserem Produzenten Spencer Proffer zusammen, der gerade "Vices" produzierte und uns diese Coverversion vorschlug. Mit dem Ergebnis trabte er zu den Machenn von "Up the Creek" und die mochten den Song. Im Film muss man allerdings schon genau darauf achten, wo das Stuck lauft.
Q: Lass uns nun endlich zu eurem neuen Longplayer "IV" kommen, auf dem KICK AXE Ur-Sanger Gary Langen an Stelle von George Criston die vierzehn Tracks eingesungen hat. Wie kam es dazu?
A: Wir sind noch alle mit George befreundet und betrachten ihn auch weiter als Teil der Band. Allerdings hinterten ihn Verpflichtungen bei Nettwerk fur Kunstler wie SARA MCLACHLAN, DIDO und AVRIL LAVIGNE an der Teilnahme. Also fragten wir kurzgehand Gary, und er war begeistert von der Idee. Ich nahm mit ihm einige Demos auf und der Rest der Band war vom Ergebnis genauso angetan wie wir.
Q: Wie kam der Deal mit MTM Music zustande?
A: Die Jungs hatten unsere Demos auf MP3.com gehort und boten uns an, das Album in Europa zu veroffentlichen. Sie sind schon seit Urzeiten KICK AXE-Fans und stehen voll hinter uns.
Q: "IV" steht auch weiterhin kraftvollen, melodischen Hardrock in der Tradition der ersten drei Scheiben. Es scheint fast, als ware die Zeit vor siebzehn Jahren stehen geblieben. Sind die Songs eigentlich uralt oder brandneu?
A: "Time", "Consolation" and "The Only Ones Here" haben schon einige Jahre auf dem Buckel und wurden fur die Aufnahmen neu arrangiert. Der Lowenateil der CD entstand zwischen 2001 und 2003 und jeder in der Band hat Material beigesteuert. Wir haben uns einen Dreck darum geschert, welche Music stromung gerade angesagt ist oder was die Leute von uns erwartet haben. Die ganze Band ist noch gefangen von der Freude, endlich wieder zusammen spielen zu konnen und wir hoffen, dass "IV" unseren Fans gefallt.
Q: Auf den ersten Alben habt ihr immer eine Coverversion "verbraten", wie "With a Little Help From My Friends" auf "Welcome to the Club". Warum nicht auf der neuen Scheibe?
A: Zu unserer Hochzeit waren wir praktisch nonstop auf Achse und sich nach einer Tour sofort wieder ins Studio, um das nachste Album zu machen. Da waren wir glucklich, unsere paar Songs mit einem bekannten Track anderer Kunstler aufstocken zu konnen. Fur die neue CD fiel uns die Auswahl wegen der Menge eigenen Materials ungleich schwerer, so dass wir uberhaupt keinen Gedanken an eine Coverversion verschwenden mussten.
Q: "Rockin' Daze" ist vielleicht das beste Stuck Musik eurer ganzen Karriere. Aber die rockigen Tage beginnen fur KICK AXE doch gerade erst wieder, also ist die Textzeile uber das Ende dieser Zeit nur ein Spass oder?
A: Dieser Song scheint etlichen Leuten zi gefallen; es handelt sich namlich um eine wahre Geschichte. Es geht um uns und wie wir von unseren damakigen Management hintergangen wurden. Es kamen damals tatsachlich "Sheriffs" auf die Buhne und nahmen uns all unser Equipment ab. Wir spielten danach noch eine Show ohne eigene Backline, aber schlussendlich mussten wir den Rest der Tour absagen. Fur uns waren die rockigen Tage damit vorbei und wortlich ubersetzt bedeutet "Daze" betaubt oder benommen. So fuhlten wir uns damals und jetzt auch noch, aber aus anderen Grunden, haha!
Q: Das bereits erwahnte "Consolation" hat schon einen gewisswn LED ZEPPELIN-Touch, oder?
A: Klar, wen haben die damals nicht beeinflusst und tun es jetzt wieder? HENDRIX, CREAM, DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, FREE, MONTROSE, STYX, URIAH HEEP und GRAND FUNK RAILROAD sind weitere Helden unserer Jugend.
Q: Und welche Songs bedeuten der Band viel?
A: "Turn to Stone" und "Black Heart" handeln von tragischen Lebenserfahrungen und rufen heftige Gefuhle hervor, wenn wir sie anhoren oder spielen. Dann gibt es auch wieder den dreiminutigen Spass "Rock 'n' Roll Dog" uber unseren Studiohund.
Q: Werdet ihr eigentlich auch auf Tour gehen und siehst du wieder einen Bedarf an ehrlicher, handgemachter Rock Musik?
A: Im August werden wir hier in Kanada auf einigen Festivals gastieren und planen einige Shows in den Staaten. Von dort erhalten wir auch regelmassig Fanpost und ich sehe deshalb recht optimistisch in die Zukunft.
Q: Siehst du die Moglichkeit einer "Best of Live"-CD oder gar eiber DVD in nicht allzu ferner Zeit, vielleicht 2005?
A: Wir werden ab jetzt jede Show mitschneiden, um eine adaquate Auswahl an Songs fur ein solches Vorhaben zu bekommen. Es wird Material von jedem Album gespielt, selbst die Soundtrack Beitrage sollen nicht zu kurz kommen. Uber eine DVD Veroffentlichung haben wir auch schon diskutiert, vielleicht konnen wir gar die alten Promovideos als Bonusmaterial beifugen.
Die "rockigen Tage" von KICK AXE haben scheinbar erst begonnen!
Finest Canadian hard rock - that's what KICK AXE stood for in the mid-eighties. For the second album "Welcome to the Club", one could at least "collect" a gold record for more than 500,000 sold units in the "Land of Unbridled Madness". In the course of a nice conversation, guitarist Larry Gillstrom tells us why it took seventeen years for the publication of "IV".
Q: Larry, many of our younger readers were not allowed to say the name KICK AXE. So, can you start with a quick rundown of the band's history?
A: It all started in the 70's as a power trio, which the brothers Vic (bass) and Gary Langen (drums, vocals) and myself founded. Later, the fourth member's place changed hands, until finally Raymond Harvey joined us as the second guitarist. This line-up had lasted a long time, but eventually Gary left the band for personal reasons. We found a substitute in my own family because my brother Brian was the drummer and George Criston joined as lead singer. During the eighties, we sold a million records and placed some of our songs on soundtracks. KICK AXE were on the same stage during this time with JUDAS PRIEST, WHITESNAKE, RUSH, METALLICA, TRIUMPH and QUIET RIOT. Legal problems with our former management led to our dissolution in the late eighties. But we always had the intention of a reunion to a suitable time. And it has come now!
Q: More than seventeen years have passed since "Rock the World". Did you continue to make music during this time and why did it take so long to reunite?
A: No, but I've stayed true to the scene as manager and producer of various Canadian groups like PARADISE and FURY. The legal and financial problems of the disappearance proved to be a heavy burden and I created a second foothold with the foundation of my own software company. George played with Doug Johnson of LOVERBOY on the already mentioned PARADISE, while Ray was playing ROCK & HYDE with Bob Rock, and by the way became a much sought after studio engineer and producer. Brian and Vic were LIONS GATE and opened a limousine rental that runs well. It took a tremendously long time before courts had made all the defenses regarding the name rights and similar.
Q: When "Rock the World" was released in 1986, stuck the business with the CD still in its infancy, which is why only a few units were pressed. While you could get the vinyl after a short time almost for a "sandwich", the CD achieved on Ebay not uncommon revenues around $150. How about a reissue?
A: It's actually due for 2005, digitally remastered and with new artwork.
Q: You've already mentioned the various soundtracks that have songs of your own. You recorded "30 Days in a Hole" for my favorite film music "Up the Creek", which was released in Germany under the seldomly title "Das turbogeile Gummiboot". Over the content we cover the mantle of silence, but the songs of CHEAP TRICK, HEART and SHOOTING STAR are great. How did KICK AXE get on the list?
A: That was related to our producer Spencer Proffer, who was just producing "Vices" and suggested this cover version to us. With the result he trotted to the making of "Up the Creek" and they liked the song. However, in the movie you have to pay close attention to where the piece runs.
Q: Let's finally get to your new longplayer "IV". KICK AXE original singer Gary Langen has sung the fourteen tracks instead of George Criston. How did that happen?
A: We're all friends with George and continue to regard him as part of the band. However, Nettwerk's obligations for artists such as SARA MCLACHLAN, DIDO and AVRIL LAVIGNE hindered his participation. So we asked Gary for a second, and he was excited about the idea. I recorded some demos with him and the rest of the band was as impressed with the result as we are.
Q: How did the deal with MTM Music come about?
A: The guys heard our demos on MP3.com and offered to record the album in Europe and to publish it. They have been KICK AXE fans for ages and are totally behind us.
Q: "IV" continues to be a powerful, melodic hard rock in the tradition of first three slices. It almost seems as though time stopped seventeen years ago. Are the songs really ancient or brand new?
A: "Time", "Consolation" and "The Only Ones Here" have been around for a few years and were rearranged for the recordings. The lion's share of the CD was created between 2001 and 2003 and everyone in the band has contributed material. We did not give a shit about which music stream is currently in fashion or what people expected from us. The whole band is still captivated by the joy of being able to play together again and we hope "IV" will please our fans.
Q: Up for the first albums, you always "burnt" a cover version, such as "Welcome to the Club" with "With a Little Help From My Friends." Why not on the new album?
A: For our wedding, we were practically nonstop on the move and after a tour, immediately returned to the studio to make the next album, so we were happy to top up our few songs with a well-known track by other artists for the new CD, the selection was much harder for us because of the amount of own material, so we did not have to worry about a cover version at all.
Q: "Rockin 'Daze" may be the best piece of music in your entire career, but the rockin' days are just starting for KICK AXE again, so the line of text about the end of this time is just a joke or?
A: This song sounds like a lot of people; it is a true story. It's about us and how we were betrayed by our management at the time. At that time, "sheriffs" came to the stage and took away all our equipment. After that we played a show without a backline, but in the end we had to cancel the rest of the tour. For us, the rockin' days were over and literally meaning dizzy. That's how we felt then and now, but for other reasons, haha!
Q: The already mentioned "Consolation" already has a certain LED ZEPPELIN -Touch, right?
A: Sure, who did not influence them at the time and do it now? HENDRIX, CREAM, DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, FREE, MONTROSE, STYX, URIAH HEEP and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD are other heroes of our youth.
Q: And which songs mean a lot to the band?
A: "Turn to Stone" and "Black Heart" are about tragic life experiences, and cause fierce feelings when we then listened or played. Then there's the three-minute fun "Rock 'n' Roll Dog" over our studio dog.
Q: Will you go on tour and see? Do you need honest, handmade rock music again?
A: In August, we will be here in Canada at some festivals and schedule some shows in the States. From there we also receive fan mail on a regular basis and I therefore look quite optimistic about the future.
Q: Do you see the possibility of a "Best of Live" CD or even a DVD in the not too distant future, maybe 2005?
A: From now on, we'll be recording every show to get an adequate selection of songs for you to get such a project. Material from each album is played, even the soundtrack contributions should not be neglected. We have already discussed a DVD release, perhaps we can even add the old promo videos as bonus material.The "rocking days" of KICK AXE have apparently just begun!
