En el transcurso de los últimos anos, el metal canadiense se ha convertido en un importante producto de exportación ávidamente consumido por un mercado siempre listo a incorporar novedades pesadas. Si bien es cierto que ningún grupo alcanzó aún la transcendencia de Rush, los aspirantes al estrellato abundan y se caracterizan por una cualidad común a todos: la energia. Kick Axe es una de las bandas canadienses con mayores posibilidades de consagrarse durante el transcurso de este ano y en esta nota la presentamos.
Cimentada en un pasado entre cuyos logros figura el haber sido elegida por los mismisimos Scorpions y Judas Priest como grupo soporte, Kick Axe es en la actualidad una de la promesas que el hard-rock se reserva para 1986. Tras ocho anos de heroica lucha y aunque con sólo dos álbumes en su haber, este quinteto canadiense está determinado a conquistar el lugar que realmente merece y al que siempre al aspirado.
Cinco gladiadores pesados
Su primer registro, "Vices", se convirtió en disco de oro en su país de origen, lo cual significa un comienzo más que alentador para cualquier agrupación que se encuentre dando sus primeros pasos. Luego, habrían de llegar sendas giras junto a dos colosos del metal como lo son Scoprpions y Judas Priest. Lenta pero sostenidamente, Kick Axe fue ascendiendo y tomando altura. Meses después, la banda recibió una oferta difícil de resistir: grabar la banda de sonido del film "Up the Creek" ("Sobre la rivera") y desde entonces, el nombre de Kick Axe ganó suficiente predicamento como para emerger a la superficie como una fuerza contenida y aguardar pacientemente a wue la llegara su hora.
Ante la proximidad del lanzamiento de su segundo álbum, el vocalista George Criston, el bajista Victor Langen, el guitarrista Raymond Arthur Harvey y los hermanos Brian y Larry Gillstrom (en bateriía y guitarra, respectivamente), se muestran más abiertos que nunca al diálogo. Individualmente, son toda una garantía. Juntos, nitroglicerina pura. Estos cinco gladiadores pesados cuyas edades rondan los veinticinco anos, alientan la filosofía de "trabajar duro... y tocar más duro todavía". Obviamente, Kick Axe ha encontrado la llave del éxito, lo único que les falta es la oportunidad para usaria.
?Como les fue en la serie de presentaciones que hicieron junto a Judas Priest?
Brian Gillstrom: "Fantástico! Nos trataron de igual a igual. Sinceramente, son lo máximo! Tanto Rob y K.K. como el resto de la banda son de la clase de músicos que se saben ganar el respeto de sus colegas. Por todo lo que aprendimos y lo bien que la pasamos esos meses, no puedo más que desearles lo mejor. Se lo merecen!
Un vocalista descalzo
Generalmente, no hay gira de la que no se guarden recuerdos gratos o en el peor de los casos, ingratos. ?Alguna anecdota en particluar?
Larry Gillstrom: "Muchímas! Antes que nada, conviene decir que a los Judas les encanta divertirse, pero su mánager trató de mantenernos alejados de ellos todo el tiempo. Lamentablemente, no les pudimos contar lo que estaba sucediendo porque hubieran surgido problemas y para nosostros la gira era demasiado importante como para ponerla en peligro por algo así. Al menos nos dejó verlos actuar. Claro que teníamos que irnos antes de que terminaran... ?La razón? El tipo sabía que los Judas querían salir a festejar con nosotros! Astuto, ?no? De todos modos, nos dimos el gusto de buriar la vigilancia de ese mastín. Tendrías que haberlo visto cuando se dio cuenta! Queriía comernos! A veces nos disfrazábamos y otras, co un poco más de suerte, sobornábamos al portero del hotel para poder escaparnos al bar donde paraban. Pero el riesgo bien valía la pena, espero que nos encontremos nuevamente en futuras giras..."
George, al verte en escena uno tiene la sensación de que no sos un vocalista común y corriente. Tus desplazamientos y la forma en que encarás al público constituyen sólo una parte de tu personalidad. La otra es que sos el único cantante que que sube a un escenario descalzo.
George Criston: "Lo hago por una cuestión de comodidad y porque me siento sumamente orgulloso de mis pies... (risas). En realidad, me gusta desplazarme libremente, como un animal, deslizarme sobre el piso... Cada uno escoge el vestuario que le es más confortable. El mío es éste y no puedo verme de otra manera."
La eterna juventud
?Recuerdan cuál fue el primer concierto de Kick Axe?
Victor Langen: "Hmm... veamos... supongo que debería recordarlo, aunque he olvidado exactamente cuándo fue. Había tanta tranquilidad en los camarines que me parecía mentira estarnos jugando la vida! Creo que ninguno de nosostros tomó real conciencia de lo que estaba pasando hasta que pusimos un pie en el escenario y nos vimos frente a cincuenta personas. En ese instante, sentimos todo el peso de la responsabilidad de golpe pero lo superamos perfectamente. Fue como debutar sexualmente; cuando pasaste la primera noche, las demás no ofrecen mayores difficultades..."
?En que se differencia "Vices" del nuevo álbum?
Brian Gillstrom: "Musicalmente, sonarmos más ajustados que en "Vices". Fuimos depurándonos y eliminando ciertos clichés a los que nos habíamos mal acostumbrado. Algunos de los efectos que utilizamos en el primer álbum nos parecieron adecuados para éste y por eso decidimos incluirlos. Ya tenemos elegido el título: "Welcome to the Club". Es pesado, contundente, ácido y al escuchario no tenés más remedio que volverte fanático de Kick Axe! Sin falsa modestia, es lo mejorque hemos hecho."
?Que opinión les merece este ir y venir incesante de nuevas bandas metálicas? ?Creen que Kick Axe será una de las sobrevivientes?
Larry Gillstrom: "Kick Axe sobrevirá porque lo nuestro no es moda, es música. Sin embargo, creo que las companías discográficas se están enriqueciendo a costa del metal y el día en que no les reditúe más, sin pensarlo dos veces, lo tirarán a la basura. No veo que el apoyo sea sincero ni que se esfuercen por mejorar la calidad del producto. Todo la que hacen es subvencionar a los grupos más "comerciales" independientemente de su talento. Ojalá recapaciten a tiempo, para bien del metal y los metálicos. Pero si hay un género que jamás morirá ese es el rockanroll. Los anos pasan y siempre sigue ahí. Creo que es el único que ha descubierto el secreto de la eterna juventud, y lo entiendo, porque un músico de rockanroll es alguien que aprendió a no envejecer jamás."
Over the last few years, Canadian metal has become an important export product eagerly consumed by a market always ready to incorporate heavy novelties. While it is true that no group has reached the transcendence of Rush, the aspirants to stardom abound and are characterized by a quality common to all: energy. Kick Axe is one of the Canadian bands with greater possibilities of consecrating during the course of this year and in this note we present.
Founded in the past whose achievements include having been chosen by the Scorpions themselves and Judas Priest as a supporting group, Kick Axe is currently one of the promises that hard-rock reserves for 1986. After eight years of heroic struggle and although with only two albums to his credit, this Canadian quintet is determined to conquer the place that really deserves and always has aspired to.
Five heavy gladiators
Their first record, "Vices", became a gold disc in the country of origin, which it means a more than encouraging start for any group that is taking its first steps. Then, they would have to arrive tours together with two colossi of metal such as Scoprpions and Judas Priest. Slowly but steadily, Kick Axe was ascending and taking height. Months later, the band received a difficult offer to resist: to record the soundtrack of the film "Up the Creek" and since then, the name of Kick Axe gained enough predicament to emerge to the surface as a restrained force and wait patiently for its time to come.
Faced with the release of their second album, vocalist George Criston, bassist Victor Langen, guitarist Raymond Arthur Harvey and brothers Brian and Larry Gillstrom (on drums and guitar, respectively), are more open than ever to dialogue. Individually, they are a guarantee. Together, pure nitroglycerin. These five heavy gladiators whose ages are about twenty-five years, encourage the philosophy of "work hard... and play even harder". Obviously, Kick Axe has found the key to success, the only thing they lack is the opportunity to use it.
How was it in the series of performances they did with Judas Priest?
Brian Gillstrom: "Fantastic! They treated us as equals, sincerely, they are the best!" Both Rob and K.K. and the rest of the band are from the class of musicians who know how to earn the respect of their colleagues. what we learned and how well we spent those months, I can only wish them the best, they deserve it!"
A barefoot vocalist
Generally, there is no tour that does not keep fond memories or in the worst case, ungrateful. Any anecdote in particluar?
Larry Gillstrom: "Many! First of all, it's worth saying that Judas love to have fun, but their manager tried to keep us away from them all the time. Unfortunately, we could not tell them what was happening because problems would have arisen and for us the tour was too important to be endangered by something like that. At least let us see them act. Of course we had to leave before they finished... The reason? The guy knew that the Judas wanted to go out to celebrate with us! Clever, right? Anyway, we gave ourselves the pleasure of biding the vigilance of that mastiff. You should have seen it when he realized! He wanted to eat us! Sometimes we disguised ourselves and sometimes, with a bit more luck, we bribed the hotel's doorman to escape to the bar where they stopped. But the risk was well worth it. I hope we meet again in future tours..."
George, seeing you on stage, you have the feeling that you are not an ordinary vocalist. Your moves and the way you face the public are only part of your personality. The other is that you are the only singer who climbs a barefoot stage.
George Criston: "I do it for comfort and because I feel extremely proud of my feet... (laughs). Actually, I like to move freely, like an animal, slide on the floor... Each one chooses the wardrobe that is most comfortable. Mine is this and I can not see myself any other way."
Eternal Youth
Remember what was the first Kick Axe concert?
Victor Langen: "Hmm... let's see... I guess I should remember it, although I've forgotten exactly when it was. There was so much tranquility in the dressing rooms that I thought it was a lie to be playing life! I think none of us took real consciousness of what was happening until we set foot on the stage and saw ourselves in front of fifty people. In that instant, we feel the full weight of responsibility at once but we surpass it perfectly. It was like making a sexual debut; when you spent the first night, the others do not offer greater difficulties..."
In what is "Vices" different from the new album?
Brian Gillstrom: "Musically, we sound more tight than in "Vices". We were debugging and eliminating certain clichés to which we had badly accustomed. Some of the effects that we used in the first album seemed right for this one and that's why we decided to include them. We have already chosen the title: "Welcome to the Club". It's heavy, blunt, acid and the listener you have no choice but to become a fan of Kick Axe! Without false modesty, it is the best thing that we have done."
What is your opinion of this incessant coming and going of new metal bands? Do you think that Kick Axe will be one of the survivors?
Larry Gillstrom: "Kick Axe will survive because ours is not fashion, it's music. However, I believe that record companies are getting rich at the expense of metal and the day they do not redeem them more, without thinking twice, they will throw it away. I do not see that the support is sincere nor that they strive to improve the quality of the product. All they do is subsidize the most "commercial" groups regardless of their talent. I hope they reconsider in time, for the sake of metal and metalists. But if there is a genre that will never die that is the rock and roll. The years pass and it is always there. I think it is the only one which has discovered the secret of eternal youth, and I understand it, because a rock and roll musician is someone who has learned never to grow old."
