Kick Axe rocanrolea con su segundo álbum
"Creo que hemos expandido nuestro gusto musical", dice Brian Gillstrom, baterista del grupo Kick Axe, quien recientemente lanzó su segundo álbum "Welcome To The Club."
"Hay bastante alboroto en él, y al mismo tiempo, musicalmente es más avanzado," explica el baterista al hablar sobre el nuevo álbum del quinteto canadiense.
Después del lanzamiento de su primer álbum, "Vices", producido por Spencer Proffer, productor de Quiet Riot y W.A.S.P., el grupo realizó una extensa gira por Estados Unidos para abrir los conciertos de grupos como Judas Priest, Scorpions, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Krokus y Ratt.
Después el grupo regresó a su país para hacer una gira Helix. Sus conciertos y la respuesta del público fueron factores importantes para la creación del material de su segundo disco de larga duración.
"Hablamos con todos los muchachos por toda Norteamérica — agrega Brian — tu aprendes a componer al saber lo que a ellos les gusta. Esa es la gente para la que estás tocando."
Kick Axe grabó su álbum en Metal Works, el estudio del grupo Triumph, con la ayuda del productor Randy Bishop y el ingeniero Ed Stone. "Metal Works es un estudio de grabación muy bueno. El sonido de la batería es vasto y definido. El sonido de las guitarras tienen ese cierto sonido puro y limpio."
El grupo tardó cuatro semanas en grabar el álbum en Toronto y otras cuatro semanas de post producción en los estudios de Pasha en Los Angeles con Spencer Proffer.
Randy Bishop, el productor del disco, comenta sobre su trabajo con Kick Axe: "La comunicación fue muy buena. Estos muchachos son cinco personas que van en una misma dirección. Sus metas son las mismas, y no hay egos atravesándose en su camino."
"Welcome to the Club" (Pasha/CBS Records), es una colección de canciones llenas de energía rocanrolera y el tema de sus composiciones sobre las luchas y problemas que experimenta nuestra sociedad.
"Make Your Move", es un número de mucha acción musical: "If It's Too Loud (You're Too Old)" es electrizante. "Hell Raisers" es un reflejo del relajo y alegría de los integrantes del grupo. También hay canciones eróticas como "If It Feels Good, Don't Stop" y "Can't Take It With You."
Además, como algo especial, Kick Axe incluye una excelente versión de "With Little Help From My Friends" (aunque la versión de Joe Cocker nunca será superada), la cual grabaron como un tributo a Los Beatles y a Led Zeppelin, ya que el baterista y guitarrista de este último grupo se conocieron durante la grabación de Cocker.
Brian Gillstrom dice que el propósito de las canciones de "Welcome to the Club" es uno muy simple: "Sólo queremos que todos olviden cualquier clase de problema que tengan, ya sea de la escuela o con una novia... Que se diviertan y dejen sus frustraciones a un lado."
Kick Axe rock out with their second album
"I think we've expanded our musical taste", says Brian Gillstrom, drummer of the band Kick Axe, who recently released their second album "Welcome To The Club".
"There's quite a bit of noise on it, and at the same time, musically it's more advanced," the drummer explains while talking about the new album from the Canadian quintet.
After releasing their first album, "Vices," produced by Spencer Proffer - producer of Quiet Riot and W.A.S.P. - the group went on an extensive U.S. tour opening for bands such as Judas Priest, Scorpions, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Krokus, and Ratt.
After that, the band returned to their home country to tour with Helix. Their concerts and the audience's response were important factors in creating the material for their second full-length record.
"We talked to all the guys all over North America," Brian adds. "You learn to write songs by knowing what they like. Those are the people you're playing for."
Kick Axe recorded their album at Metal Works, the studio owned by Triumph, with the help of producer Randy Bishop and engineer Ed Stone. "Metal Works is a very good recording studio. The drum sound is vast and defined. The guitars have that pure, clean sound."
The group spent four weeks recording the album in Toronto and another four weeks of post-production at Pasha Studios in Los Angeles with Spencer Proffer.
Randy Bishop, the album's producer, comments on his work with Kick Axe: "Communication was very good. These guys are five people moving in the same direction. Their goals are the same, and there are no egos getting in the way."
"Welcome to the Club" (Pasha/CBS Records) is a collection of songs full of rock and roll energy, with lyrics that deal with the struggles and problems our society experiences.
"Make Your Move" is a track full of musical action; "If It's Too Loud (You're Too Old)" is electrifying. "Hell Raisers" reflects the band members' fun-loving, carefree spirit. There are also erotic songs such as "If It Feels Good, Don't Stop" and "Can't Take It With You."
In addition, as something special, Kick Axe includes an excellent version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" (although Joe Cocker's version will never be surpassed), which they recorded as a tribute to The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, since the drummer and guitarist of the latter band met during Cocker's recording.
Brian Gillstrom says that the purpose of the songs on "Welcome to the Club" is very simple: "We just want everyone to forget whatever problems they have, whether it's school or a girlfriend… to have fun and leave their frustrations behind."
