KICK AXE "Vices" (Pasha) ***1/2
Così, i Kick Axe sono finalmente giunti all'esordio, e visti i risultati valeva la pena di attendere così tanto! Dopo tante delusioni, ecco una band dal suono commerciale capace di crearsi uno stile personale ed avvincente. "Vices" è un album di classe, suonato con una professionalità sorprendente da un gruppo seppur così giovane e all'apparenza inesperto. E qui grande merito va attribuito alla produzione di Spencer Proffer, in netta ripresa dopo il tonfo dell'ultimo disco dei Quiet Riot.
Non c'è affinità, comunque, tra i due gruppi scelti da Proffer: Kick Axe è ben altra cosa rispetto ai californiani, proponendo un Hard Rock originale ed energico, dotato di un fascino irresistibile. E conciliando questi due aspetti, i canadesi pongono un'ulteriore stato di depressione qualitativa tutte quelle A.O.R. bands dal suono così scialbo e privo d'immaginazione.
Tanto più significativa è pertanto la sequenza dei brani, tra cui spiccano "On the Road to Rock", "Alive and Kickin'", "Dreaming About You" e la prorompente title-track. Una gradita sorpresa, dunque, da parte di un gruppo su cui ho molta fiducia. Non vedo l'ora di ascoltarne qualcosa di più…

KICK AXE "Vices" (Pasha) ***1/2
So, Kick Axe have finally made their debut, and judging by the results, the long wait was absolutely worth it. After so many disappointments, here at last is a band with a commercial sound that still manages to carve out a personal and compelling style. Vices is a classy album, played with surprising professionalism by a group so young and seemingly inexperienced. And a great deal of credit for that goes to Spencer Proffer's production, a clear return to form after the flop of Quiet Riot's latest record.
There's no real similarity, however, between the two bands Proffer has chosen to work with: Kick Axe are something entirely different from the Californians, delivering an original and energetic brand of Hard Rock with an irresistible charm. By combining these qualities, the Canadians highlight the growing creative slump of so many A.O.R. bands whose sound has become so bland and unimaginative.
All the more significant, then, is the sequence of tracks, among which "On the Road to Rock," "Alive and Kickin'," "Dreaming About You," and the explosive title track stand out. A very welcome surprise from a band I have a lot of faith in. I can't wait to hear more from them…
