Kick Axe Interview
"Chiudi quella maledetta porta!!"
E così eccoci ad un'altra avventura che noi, intrepidi corrispondenti di "Sdeath!", dobbiamo sostenere avventurandoci in un'oscura e profonda stanza d'albergo. E col cuore in mano ci accingiamo ad intervistare un gruppo, Kick Axe… e ciò che fanno meglio è dare i calci in culo!
D: Diteci qualcosa sul disco.
Larry Gillstrom (lead guitar): Non abbiamo mai fatto un disco!
Vic Langen (bass): Siamo andati in vacanza!
George Criston (vocals): Che palle questi giornalisti…
Divertente, ragazzi, molto divertente. Penso che sia meglio cambiare quella frase "col cuore in mano" con "con la propria incolumità…" A parte gli scherzi, il disco si chiama "Vices" (abbastanza appropriato come titolo) ed è uscito per la CBS/Pasha Records. Dopo un'uscita prevista ad aprile, la data ha continuato ad essere posticipata. Ora è già uscito.
Ray Harvey (guitar): La realizzazione era prevista prima per il solo Canada, ma poi la CBS ha deciso di farlo uscire in contemporanea mondiale.
D: Avete scelto una canzone per farne un video?
Ray: Beh non ancora, sai dipende sempre dall'airplay che il disco ottiene e dalla casa discografica…
D: Che mi dici di un singolo?
Ray: La CBS ha limitato la scelta attorno a cinque canzoni.
Larry: Sì, perché non c'è solo UNA canzone potente nel disco, sono tutte potenti! Tutte sono dei potenziali hit.
A proposito di hits, "Vices" è stato prodotto da Spencer Proffer (per quelli che hanno vissuto in una caverna lo scorso anno ha prodotto "Metal Health" dei Quiet Riot) e Kick Axe hanno solo parole di elogio per lui.
George: Quell'uomo è un genio, un genio assoluto! E tutti i ragazzi alla Pasha sono in gamba.
Ray: Credo che sia un uomo perfetto; è l'uomo giusto per noi.
D: Ha fatto molte variazioni? Ad esempio, mi sembra che "Road to Rock" abbia un suono più aggressivo rispetto al passato…
Ray: Lui ha effettuato piccoli arrangiamenti e cose del genere, ma principalmente siamo stati noi a cambiare. L'ascolto delle nostre vecchie registrazioni ci ha indotto a farlo.
George: Spencer ha solo pensato a farci esprimere al meglio.
D: Ogni gruppo ha il suo compositore principale. Nei Kick-Axe è Larry Gillstrom…
Ray: Larry butta il seme, noi lo facciamo crescere.
Larry: Sì, e magari mi buttano fuori la prossima volta.
George: Fa solo un po' troppo il modesto…
Larry: Svolgo la mia occupazione quotidiana… (ridendo)
Una cosa di cui i nostri eroi sono assolutamente fieri è l'aver preso parte ad una colonna sonora di un film. Intitolato "Up the Creek", il film è appena uscito. Apparentemente sul tema di "Animal House", esso ha una colonna sonora a cui partecipano grossi nomi come Cheap Trick, Beach Boys, Heart, Ian Hunter, Shooting Star… La canzone che i Kick-Axe propongono è un remake di un vecchio hit degli Humble Pie, "30 Days in the Hole", e potremmo dire anche che è un eccellente remake! Cos'altro chiedere?
Ray: No, nessuno vuole sapere nulla su quella cosa…
D: Nessuno vuole?
George: Beh, perché no?
D: Sì, ditemi qualcosa!
Larry: Beh, abbiamo scritto un paio di pezzi per i Black Sabbath…
Ray: Li abbiamo registrati quando siamo stati a L.A. Spencer ci ha incaricato di scriverli.
Con 4, dico 4, canzoni scritte per i Sabbath, una song su una colonna sonora che è da sola un potenziale hit, più il loro album, Kick Axe sono pronti per conquistare il mondo! Per quanto riguarda i tours, Kick Axe aspettano di vedere i risultati del loro primo album. In seguito andranno probabilmente negli States. Con un disco di platino? Non male per questi buoni, vecchi kids della westside. Kick-Axe sono rimasti a Vancouver negli ultimi 5 anni, firmando un contratto manageriale con la Star Kommand/Gary Stratychuck nel giugno del 1983.
Ray: Non parliamo del passato…
D: Che mi dici del futuro, allora?
George: Party!!
Vic: Vedremo come ci andrà. Continuate a sentire la nostra musica e vedrete cosa succederà…
George: Dipenderà dal genere di canzone che avrà più successo: noi ne rifaremo diverse sullo stesso tipo. Ad es, due tipi di orientamento diversi possono essere "Road to Rock" o "Heavy Metal Shuffle". Credo che la nostra direzione futura si deciderà in merito al successo di una di queste due tracks.
E mentre faranno tutto ciò, a cosa si dedicheranno? Avete indovinato… Party, party.

"Close that damn door!!"
Here we are again, facing another adventure that we, the fearless correspondents of "Sdeath!", must endure as we step into a dark, deep hotel room. With our hearts in our hands, we prepare to interview a band, Kick Axe… and what they do best is kicking ass.
Q: Tell us something about the album.
Larry Gillstrom (lead guitar): We've never made an album!
Vic Langen (bass): We went on vacation!
George Criston (vocals): Journalists are such a pain…
Very funny, guys. I think I'd better replace "with our hearts in our hands" with "risking our own safety." Jokes aside, the album is titled "Vices" and is out on CBS/Pasha Records. After an originally planned April release, the date kept getting pushed back. Now it's finally out.
Ray Harvey (guitar): It was originally meant for Canada only, but CBS decided to release it worldwide at the same time.
Q: Have you chosen a song for a video?
Ray: Well, not yet. You know, it always depends on the airplay the record gets and on the label…
Q: What about a single?
Ray: CBS narrowed it down to five songs.
Larry: Yeah, because there isn't just one strong song — they're all strong. Every one is a potential hit.
Speaking of hits, Vices was produced by Spencer Proffer (for those who spent last year living in a cave, he produced Quiet Riot's "Metal Health"), and Kick Axe have nothing but praise for him.
George: That man is a genius — an absolute genius! And everyone at Pasha is really sharp.
Ray: I think he's the perfect guy; he's exactly the right man for us.
Q: Did he make many changes? For example, it seems to me that "Road to Rock" has a more aggressive sound compared to the past…
Ray: He did some small arrangements and things like that, but for the most part it was us who changed. Listening to our old recordings pushed us in that direction.
George: Spencer just brought out the best in us.
Q: Every band has a main songwriter. For Kick Axe it's Larry Gillstrom…
Ray: Larry plants the seed, we make it grow.
Larry: Yeah, and maybe they'll kick me out next time.
George: He's too modest.
Larry: Just doing my daily job… (laughs)
One thing our heroes are absolutely proud of is having taken part in the soundtrack of a film. Titled "Up the Creek", the movie has just been released. Apparently similar in theme to "Animal House", it features a soundtrack with big names such as Cheap Trick, the Beach Boys, Heart, Ian Hunter, Shooting Star… The song contributed by Kick Axe is a remake of an old Humble Pie hit, "30 Days in the Hole", and we could even say it’s an excellent remake. What more could you ask for.
Ray: No, nobody wants to know anything about that.
Q: Nobody wants to?
George: Why not?
Q: Yes, tell me something.
Larry: Well, we wrote a couple of songs for Black Sabbath.
Ray: We recorded them when we were in L.A. Spencer asked us to write them.
With four — yes, four — songs written for Sabbath, a track on a movie soundtrack that could easily become a hit on its own, plus their own album, Kick Axe are ready to take on the world! As for touring, Kick Axe are waiting to see how their first album performs. After that, they will probably head to the States. With a platinum record in hand? Not bad for these good old kids from the west side. Kick Axe have been based in Vancouver for the past five years, signing a management deal with Star Kommand/Gary Stratychuck in June 1983.
Ray: Let's not talk about the past.
Q: Then what about the future?
George: Party!!
Vic: We'll see how things go. Keep listening to our music and you'll see what happens…
George: It depends on which type of song becomes successful. For example, two different types of musical direction could be "Road to Rock" or "Heavy Metal Shuffle". I believe that our future direction will be decided based on the success of one of these two tracks.
And while they’re doing all that, what will they be up to? You guessed it… partying, partying.
