[article]: 'Kick Axe IV' album review

Listening to the music proposed by Kick Axe in the 80s was, before the recent reissue on CD (reserved, for the time being, only the first two records, but, apparently, with the third on the way), a true feat.

Their LPs are, in fact, to be considered as "rare goods" for the many collectors who are passionate about Canadian hard rock: it is difficult to take possession of these little gems of melodic hard pomp, mature and decidedly personal, that our people were able to offer to the public , especially in the debut "Vices" of the 84, but also in the following, more radio "Welcome to the club" ('85), ending with the third "Rock the world", of '87, (which many consider as a episode subdued, a judgment that, personally, I do not agree at all, remembering beautiful tracks like "We still remember", "Magic man" and the excellent Fleetwood Mac cover "The chain") that concluded (until today) their artistic parable, between the indifference of the recording industry that did not believe in their proposal.

In this era of hard rock "revival" here again the Kick Axe, fresh from contract with MTM, offer us this "IV" with the same line-up of "Rock the world" with the exception of the resigning excellent singer George Criston (absorbed by commitments, probably more profitable, with artists such as Dido and Avril Lavigne), replaced by the microphone by Gary Langen (actually the very first singer of the band and brother of the bassist Victor) and the return, as a second guitar, by Raymond Harvey, already present in the first two works by canuck rockers. The style of the group has remained, in general, the same as the beginning, but, to tell the truth, something seems to be missing, to these songs, to "stand out" in a convincing way: it will perhaps be Langen's vocal style, equipped good quality, but certainly not up to its most original precursor, or perhaps, these difficulties are due to lack of composition ... in any case, the album is struggling to take off.

We can not say that we are dealing with an absolutely unsatisfactory album, but simply many of the songs are not at all incisive, they flow without leaving a trace and do not "do" anything to imprint themselves in the memory.

Only rarely do the Kick Axe recall their rank and score some truly winning "hits", as happens in the enthralling "Turn to stone", in the powerful "Time" (in which Langen offers a deaf vocal interpretation), in the vibrant ballad wide-ranging entitled "Black heart" (still the singer in evidence) and in particular "The only ones here".

The "Right now" and "Do you know" energetic, with good vocal doughs and "Slip inside my dream", dominated by the pulsations of the bass by Victor Langen and by a rather pleasant melodic line, are also noteworthy.

It is likely that a little more severity in judging this record is due to the illustrious past of the Canadian band and that if it were a team at its debut, the evaluation would have been more benevolent ... the problem is that they still echo in the ears all those musical "gems" that our people have been able to give to the "beautiful times" ... everything may sound a little "nostalgic", but I assure you that it is not so ... from the best you always expect the best and after waiting so long, I think it was reasonable to expect a little more!

We just have to try to consider this "IV", as a propedeutic to the "true" return in grand style of the Canadians, a sort of "rehearsal" (in an environment that no longer frequented by a few years), hoping to see them, how much first, once again protagonists of the world hard scene.

For the moment we do not go (sigh!) over a simple enough ... too little for a band like the Kick Axe ... given the expectations, really too little!
